About Me
Hello and Welcome to the website for my senior journalism Project! My name is Syreeta Yelverton and I have attended Stony Brook University for the past four years. I came to Stony Brook undeclared because I had no idea what I wanted to do. After taking a year of random classes (political science, statistics, psychology... you name it!) I realized that there were two common threads, my love of writing and social justice. Journalism requires a concentration and the major is only a few classes heavier than the minors I decided to declare journalism as my first major, and sociology as my second and it has been a great journey ever since. Currently, I am involved in our advanced broadcast, the Stony Brook News, and am an intern at WSHU News, an NPR affiliate station.

About The Project
"Black Lives. Black Men." is a project that aimed to depict the lives and experiences of Black men. I was inspired to do this project when my school, Stony Brook University, received an "F" rating for its treatment of Black students in a study done by the University of Southern California. With the help of my professors, I decided to focus specifically on the untold stories of Black men. So I did my best to find four representative Black Stony Brook male students, to tell their stories. I hope that this project helps those who aren't Black realize that the experience and struggles that they go through are real and are not just romanticized, or as James Breton put it, "isn't just something you see on TV."
